Bus Stop Placement (Read more)

Although eliminating bus stops is now officially recommended in the latest Transit Development Plan, the ongoing dismantling of a finely-tuned system has actually been going on for years, sometimes to make way for more parking, other times in the name of speeding up travel time. A recent report of a pilot study in Baltimore issued long after the adoption of the current Plan and based on studies in many locations prompted us in turn to issue a position statement callling for the preservation of many of the bus stops identified for elimination. Instead of diminishing quality of service through eliminating bus stops, Metro should adopt policies of all-door boarding and concrete padding that would service both rear and front doors where possible. Rapid or express buses can skip stops serviced by other buses.
