Dear Editor: The mayor refuses to consider sensible alternatives to his proposed huge bus fare hike. Cost-saving measures that would help keep fares at current levels include: nixing the proposed private security force to police Metro's transit points (Why can't city police do it? Or give up the consumer-unfriendly transit points altogether?); nixing the proposed new Metro marketing position (please!); and not further beefing up Metro's reserve funds.
Why does the mayor believe it's "essential" to purchase a $200,000 snow-maker for Elver Park, but he is ready to make our wonderful bus system unaffordable for those who use it to get to their jobs and the grocery store? Hiking bus fares would be a real black eye to Madison's reputation as a livable city. I don't get it. What is the mayor thinking!
