A man who gave a cigarette to a man asking for one allegedly was punched in the face at the South Side bus station, with the suspect arrested later Monday night

Marcus Curtis, 32, Madison, was tentatively charged with robbery, Madison police said in a news release.

The incident took place at about 10:30 p.m. Monday at the Metro Transit south transfer point, 802 W. Badger Road.

Police said:

Curtis was at the bus station and struck up a conversation with the victim, getting a cigarette from the victim before allegedly hitting him and fleeing with a friend.

"Later on, they returned, and the same circumstances played out between Curtis and the same victim," said police spokesman Daryl Doberstein. "However, this time, Curtis allegedly took the victim's cellphone before he and the friend fled."

Curtis was located by officers and was arrested.
