Bus rapid transit, other simple changes could speed service

Opinion    The Capital Times    Oct. 10, 2009

Dear Editor: Finally a good idea regarding transportation in Madison. The bus rapid transit along with some simple and inexpensive changes could speed up service and increase ridership tremendously.

As a Madison Metro driver, I am amazed that Madison doesn't give buses the right of way. Allowing buses to pull into traffic without the usual confrontations that occur every time they try to merge would save time. Having people ready to board with passes ready would help. When buses pull up to a stop, if people don't want that particular bus, have them wave the bus by.

If Madison truly wants to improve traffic on the isthmus and improve the pollution concerns, they should take cars off the downtown streets and transport people there on buses. Park and rides could be set up in areas such as Segoe Road, Olin Avenue, Park Street, and the East Towne and West Towne malls.
