Metro bus service is expanding in Fitchburg, with early service to the University of Wisconsin campus and hospital and weekend and holiday service from Madison's west side to the Fitchburg business park.

The service improvements are set to start on Sunday, Aug. 23.

The early morning service on Route 44 will make it easier for students and employees to get from Fitchburg to the UW complex in time for 7 a.m. shifts and early classes.

The first departure from the Nobel Drive/Fish Hatchery Road stop will be at 5:56 a.m. and should arrive on campus at 6:31 and at the hospital at 6:37 a.m.

Route 44 runs direct from the Fitchburg Technology Campus to UW during peak morning and evening rush hours Monday through Friday.

Route 59, the new weekend and holiday service complementing the weekday Route 52, will operate express from the West Transfer Point to the intersection of Red Arrow Trail and Thurston Lane, then will make stops all along neighborhoods and businesses in the McKee Road corridor, ending up at the Fitchburg Business Park near Seminole Highway.

Route 59 will run once an hour generally between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. on weekends, and on the regular holiday schedule for Metro routes.
