Dennis B. Appleton: Teamsters union needs to play fair

The Wisconsin State Journal, February 10, 2010

Wrestling with the issue of grossly inflated pay for some city bus drivers contains the key to its own solution.

In legitimate wrestling, dangerous choke holds are banned, and those who use them are severely penalized or disqualified. The unconscionable stranglehold that the drivers’ union has applied to Madison’s finances should be treated in the same manner.

The bus drivers and their union need a lesson in good sportsmanship. Their “team” needs to change its tactics, from doing whatever they can get away with to doing what is fair and right for everyone — including the riders and taxpayers who ultimately provide their salaries.
