Madison Council Makes Deal With MGE

The Utility Agrees To Take Steps To Lessen The Impact Of A Proposed Power Plant At And Around UW

Lisa Schuetz, Wisconsin State Journal

While making quick work of a lengthy agenda, the Madison City Council made final Tuesday night a handful of measures that will likely impact certain Madison neighborhoods.

* Council members approved an agreement between Madison Gas and Electric Co. and the city that calls for measures that would mitigate health, noise and environmental impacts from a $180 million, 150-megawatt cogeneration power plant proposed for the UW-Madison campus.

If the Public Service Commission approves the agreement later this month, and approves the plant's construction, an air-quality monitoring station would be built nearby and MGE would have to keep noise from the plant at levels well below city requirements.

In addition, MGE will pay the city $200,000 in 2005 to use for putting ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel in Madison Metro buses.

Ald. Robbie Webber, whose 5th District includes the proposed plant site, reminded interested parties that approval of the agreement did not constitute an endorsement of the plant.
