More hybrid buses coming to Madison

Madison plans to buy 18 more diesel-electric hybrid buses with $9.5 million of transit-related federal stimulus money, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz said Friday.

The city bought its first five hybrid buses in 2007.

The new buses will replace existing buses in the fleet.

Each costs about $500,000, or $180,000 more than regular buses, but uses 30 percent less diesel fuel to operate.

Cieslewicz noted the resulting reduction in emissions would help Dane County further reduce its air pollution levels, which now comply with federal standards.

"Even though we're below the allowable limit, we're too close to it," Cieslewicz said. "We need to drive down the number."
