Madison and UW-Madison officials are expected to roll out the first five diesel-electric hybrid buses in the Metro Transit fleet today, the first such vehicles to be introduced in the state.

The city purchased the vehicles, which are expected to save fuel costs and reduce emissions, with a $1.9 million federal grant and $475,000 in city borrowing. The city has agreed to purchase 10 more hybrid buses over the next four years. Some of the vehicles will serve the university, which helped purchase them.
